Hi This is a question on the circulatory system! Why is there a pause between 2 heartbeats?

I was doing some reading and it just occured to me that I could express this occurence in terms of ventricular contraction and relaxation aka systole and diastole. Could anyone help me with that? Your kindness is very much appreciated. Thank you!
